Social Media is dead!

Recently I was thinking about the pervalence of social media sites. I am of the opinion that they are the reality TV of the internet technology. In the sense that there’s no great innovation behind them. There’s no real renaissance that’s happening. Only a re-packaging of existing material. Reading this article on Startup North I find myself agreeing with him. The fact of the matter is that in the end social media is merely a platform for the lazy.

And I should clarify what I mean by this term. I am referring to the one-stop solutions that are being offered these days. The list is endless and they all do the same thing. There was photo sharing (and tagging) long before this, and there were blogging services too. Forums are nothing new either. And don’t even get me started on messaging!

On the other hand, the social networking software has given a chance to the less tech-savvy to create an internet presence at no charge, the same way that reality TV has done that for TV presence! My hope is that social sites don’t become the filler on the internet the same way their TV counterparts have done!
